The Saint Savior Church of the Armenian Apostolic Holy Church in Old Batumi was built by initiative of the local Armenian community and also by support from wealthy Armenians in Baku. It was first built as a wooden church. The process of replacing it by the present stone church started in 1879 and was completed only in 1899. The church was closed in the early Soviet period and was used, first as a warehouse, and later as an observatory. Its function as a church was restored in 1992. In the yard of the church there is a giant Magnolia tree. This tree has a very special story. It was planted in 1890 by the Armenian-Russian painter Ivan Aivazovsky (b. 1817, Feodosiya, Crimea, d. 1900). This makes the magnolia tree over 130 years old (source).
